Australian scientists have discovered nine new genes associated with breast cancer, the total number to 40 genes, underscoring the complexity of the genetic disease, said ?WordScience.org?. A study published recently in the journal Nature, is part of an international initiative to sequence the genomes of various types of cancer. Breast Cancer Researchers have studied all the genes in the genome of the 100 cases of breast cancer. Mutation causes cancer genes, which are different in different samples of cancer, and breast cancer is genetically very diverse, says Sunil Lakhani, a professor of the Center for Clinical Research at the University of Queensland. Sandy Gillians of Georgetown, Ontario, has been kind enough send us one of her ancestral stories. Sandy has recently taken on the family history research duties from her father. Her Dad is going to be a very hard act to follow, since he has succeeded in tracing the family?s origins back to a carpenter who arrived in ?the New World? aboard the ?Mayflower?.
The mystery that Sandy had been looking to solve is a dark story that involves a Mr Joseph Thomas Pile and the workhouse in Lambeth. By chance, Sandy saw a mention of the British Newspaper Archive. Shen then visited the BNA website, did a search for his name and, ?Eureka!?, the long-running mystery was suddenly revealed.

I thought you might like to know about a discovery I made through your site. A pretty shocking one, at that.
My dad has had a lifelong passion for genealogy and as he is now 86, he has passed his work over to me. Ironically it has been a lot easier to trace my mother?s roots than my fathers. She?s from old United Empire Loyalist stock ? refugees from the American Revolution ? who are in turn descended from prominent early settlers in Massachusetts including a carpenter who sailed over on the Mayflower, early New England Puritans, and Quakers who came over with William Penn. Mix in some Protestant Irish refugees to New Brunswick from the potato famine and some Irish-Catholic cod fishermen from Newfoundland, and it makes for a lively family story of early America and pioneer Canada.
My dad?s side is English ? both his father and mother were the children of London immigrants to Montreal. Mysteries on his mother?s side have long intrigued him, and now me as well.
Joseph Gore, my dad?s grandfather (and my great-grandfather) was a Home Child sent over from Liverpool to Knowlton, Quebec, Canada by Louisa Birt in 1880. And while this is also an interesting bit of Canadian history, the big mystery actually related to his wife, my great-grandmother, Esther (Hester) Pile.
Hester was born in 1862 in Lambeth. At the age of 9 the census shows her living at Lambeth workhouse school Norwood with ALL of her siblings. There is no mention of the parents. What happened to them? A family tragedy? By 1881 Hester is 19 and working as a housemaid at the rectory house for Oxford St Thomas. The clergyman?s wife is Eliza A. Kemp; the clergyman does not appear on this census.
10 years later Hester is a matron for the family of Percy P. Lascelles, a prominent London ?toff?. She seems to have done well. A boarder in the home, Arthur Wood, later emigrated to Canada and became a minister at St. John Evangelist church in Montreal. He and Hester stayed in contact for many years.
How Hester ended up in Montreal, penniless and claiming that a man had scammed her out of 70 pounds, is still unsolved. It?s clear she was no longer in service to the Lascelles family, and she soon met my great-grandfather and married him. She was 32. Sadly it was not a happy marriage as he was a very troubled man and as I found out from your website, Hester?s childhood was even more horrific. These were two very strong but emotionally damaged survivors.
I was dogged in my determination to find out more about Hester?s early life; something in her hardscrabble story compelled me, and I wanted to know how all these children ended up in the workhouse with no parents. When I finally found Hester?s father, Joseph Thomas Pile, I was puzzled. In 1879 he married a woman named Emma Glynn and was working as a surveyor?s assistant. This is a full seven years all of his children had been living as inmates at Lambeth Workhouse, and Hester by this time would have been 16 years old. Where had he been? What had happened to his first wife Emma Scopes, the mother of his children?
One day quite by accident I came across a mention of your website, and curious, I decided to follow the link. The first search I made was for Joseph Thomas Pile. I certainly didn?t expect to find anything, but an article immediately popped up in front of my eyes. What I then read nearly made my eyes pop out of my head!
The Morning Post, Thursday, May 28, 1874. Lambeth.
?Joseph Pile, 42, described as an architect and surveyor, was charged on a warrant with deserting his two children whereby they had become chargeable to the parish of Lambeth.
Mr. Aimes, one of the relieving officers of Lambeth, stated that in April last two of the defendant?s children, aged 13 and 11 years, were brought to the workhouse. They were in a destitute and very neglected condition. The defendant had before deserted his children, and been sent to prison from this court. His wife through his misconduct had become lunatic, and was in Hoxton House Asylum. After her removal to the asylum he brought home a woman, who lived with him, and he told the children their mother was dead, and that the woman was to be their mother in future. He left them one day, telling them he would soon be back, but the children had never seen him again until he was in custody. The woman also left them, and said they had better find their way to the workhouse. The children wandered about the streets for hours without food, and ultimately were admitted to the workhouse. On the first desertion he took the children from the workhouse, and directly he got outside he left them again on the doorstep.
The prisoner?s children, four in number, were in court, and the eldest daughter, aged 20, described her father?s conduct as cruel in the extreme. He had on one occasion left his little boy, aged nine years, in the street without a shirt and in a destitute condition. The defendant had knocked her down, kicked her, and turned her out of doors.
Another daughter, 16, stated that her father had told her and the other children that their mother was dead when he brought home the woman.
The prisoner denied the charge, and said he had sent money for their support He also added that he was a Baptist, and regularly attended his church, and that his eldest daughter belonged to the High Church party, and they were against him.
Mr. Chance observed that he had evidently not regularly attended to his children.
A former landlady of the defendant was called, and stated that he was frequently in the habit of getting drunk.
The magistrate said it was a very bad case. The defendant was evidently a man of drunken habits, and, not satisfied with deserting his children, he had in a cruel manner told them their poor mother was dead, while he knew she was an inmate of a lunatic asylum. He sentenced him to three months? hard labour.
The relieving officer informed his worship that the prisoner?s wife was costing the parish 17s 6d per week while in the asylum.?
Wow! I immediately called my dad and he was as gobsmacked as I was by the discovery and delighted to have a truly notorious character in the family tree. I?m still musing over the days when a husband could drive his wife crazy and then consign her to a nuthouse.
Joseph Thomas Pile died in 1881, just over two years after he remarried and at the age of 48.? Painfully, one hopes.

Three out of every ten Alaska kids are obese, and will more likely grow up to be obese adults dealing with major illnesses. Fighting obesity has become a top priority for health advocates who are using a powerful documentary to get families off their couch and moving.
With 30 percent of kids in Alaska considered overweight, it?s what could happen when they?re older that health officials say will cost us more than we already spend.
?Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis,? said Karol Fink, who is the Obesity Prevention manager for the State of Alaska. ?We?re spending $459 million annually on medical care costs attributed full to obesity just in Alaska.?

According to the?DigiTimes, HTC and Facebook are working on a ?Facebook phone?, saying that the HTC hardware would be paired with ?a platform exclusive to Facebook?.
This would be the third handset the two companies have collaborated on after the ChaCha and Salsa handsets, which featured a dedicated Facebook button and OS-level Facebook integration. These earlier devices were well liked by social media enthusiasts, but were a bit handicapped with too little RAM and processing power. Could we see a Facebook phone that ships with Android 4.0 and more powerful hardware ? maybe even some Beats branded?HTC headphones?for those young kids? These weren?t?HTC One V accessories, but it still could happen as HTC looks to shore up some weak Q1 results.
This next collaboration might even by branded with the Facebook name, something that Mark Zuckerburg argued against when the first two Facebook phones were just a rumour. For that reason, it seems a bit less likely that we?ll see a Facebook phone, as Facebook will want to appear neutral and not favouring any one platform over another, but it could happen I suppose.

PARMA, Italy (Reuters) - Federico Pizzarotti was an unknown, 38-year-old computer technician at a bank until a few weeks ago. Just four days after being elected the mayor of Parma, he has become the most-watched political figure in Italy.
Pizzarotti's leap to fame comes thanks to the grassroots Five-Star Movement, led by comedian Beppe Grillo, which dealt a stunning blow to the parties that have governed Italy for the past two decades in this month's local elections.
Pizzarotti has astonished observers of the Italian political scene by emerging from obscurity to become the first Five-Star candidate to run one of the country's major cities.
The movement, which was created just three years ago and relies extensively on the Internet, has become the country's second most popular party with more than 18 percent support and more than half of Italians would consider voting for it, according to opinion polls.
"Two weeks ago, nobody knew who I was. I feel quite a bit of weight on my shoulders, everybody is watching us," Pizzarotti told Reuters in an interview in a frescoed chamber in Parma's 15th-century town hall.
The success of the protest movement reflects a Europe-wide trend seen from Greece to Germany as the economic crisis has eroded the standing of traditional political parties, blamed for the worst downturn since World War Two.
Like the Northern League 20 years ago, the Five-Star Movement is gaining momentum in Italy's economic heartland in the north. Parma, famous for Parmesan cheese and cured ham, is one of the region's most prosperous cities, and home to almost 190,000 people.
In blue jeans, tennis shoes and a purple sweater, Pizzarotti still seems uncomfortable with media attention, unlike the movement's founder, Grillo, who makes full use of the limelight to blast a scandal-prone elite that has overseen more than a decade of economic stagnation in Italy.
Grillo has also tapped into growing unease with austerity measures and recession by attacking Prime Minister Mario Monti's government of technocrats, which created 24 billion euros ($30 billion) in new taxes this year alone.
Something like an Italian Michael Moore, Grillo's language is irreverent and outlandish. He uses the most vulgar Italian swear words without hesitation, and awards his political rivals colourful nicknames.
Monti is "Rigor Montis," and former Premier Silvio Berlusconi is the "psycho-midget". Italy's established parties are dead, he says, and their leaders are "zombies, vampires, mummies".
The bear-like Grillo, who sports a beard and a mop of tangled white hair, says Italy should dump the euro, devalue the lira, and force foreign banks to accept debt payments - at a loss - in the new currency.
The baby-faced Pizzarotti does not look like Grillo and does not sound like Grillo.
As mayor, his biggest challenge will be managing Parma's 600-million-euro ($750 million) debt, and he will probably need to negotiate with banks Grillo usually derides as the root of the crisis.
"One should not demonise banks. They have a fundamental role in everybody's life," Pizzarotti said.
Pizzarotti chooses his words carefully and does not swear. Instead of attacking rivals, he talks about finding "common ground". He sidesteps the question of the euro, saying he is not an economist.
"We do different jobs," Pizzarotti said of the movement's leader. "He's our loudspeaker, he shakes up people's consciences. He is like a plough that shifts the earth. We are the ones planting the seeds."
"During the campaign, some people told me they didn't like Grillo. I told them that Grillo is not coming to govern here. I am," he said.
FROM MOVEMENT TO PARTY
The change has brought a minor revolution to the familiar cast of middle-aged and elderly men who dominate Italian politics but not everyone is convinced.
"I am puzzled. Parma has a lot of problems. It's good to see all these new, clean faces but you need experienced people to run a city," said bar owner Maria Enrica Galli.
Grillo refuses to call the movement a party, and bans his candidates from going on TV talk shows. The Internet, his blog and social networks are the movement's main means of communication.
It accepts no public campaign financing, unlike the millions of euros pocketed by the established parties every year, funding itself instead from the proceeds of Grillo's stand up shows, and sales of books, videos and T shirts. Pizzarotti spent just over 6,000 euros ($7,500) on his entire campaign.
But with national elections looming early next year and Italy still dangerously enmeshed in the euro zone crisis, the Five Star Movement will come under increasing scrutiny as it seeks to convert its local success to the national stage.
"Grillo and his people have a big job ahead, because a grassroots movement is one thing, but it's quite another thing to organise a real party," said James Walston, a political analyst at the American University in Rome.
"Where there is the smell of power, all sorts of people come out of the woodwork and they will have to work very carefully to maintain their purity," he said.
What is clear is that the thirty-somethings who make up the political bloc have a lot to learn.
In fact, Pizzarotti and his 19 council members are taking a crash course on administrative law from local professors, starting on Thursday, and he has put up an ad on Grillo's blog seeking an experienced administrator.
"We're looking for a person with experience managing the mechanics of city government to be director general as soon as possible. No criminal record, not tied to traditional parties, with proven competence," the ad read, inviting email resumes.
Even handling the time demands of his new job is a challenge for Pizzarotti. As he spoke in the interview, his wife Cinzia kept interrupting.
"We're running late. We've got loads to do. You need to learn to manage your time," she said.

For Some Canada Geese, A Life On The Road

Only a bird-brained parent would raise their children year after year on the thin grassy strips on the edges of a highway, feet from speeding streams of offspring-flattening cars and trucks.
Maybe that explains why every spring, nesting geese return to the edges of I-84 in Waterbury, to a Route 3 entrance ramp in Glastonbury, to a retention pond off I-84 in Southington and other spots close to busy highways.
The Canada goose family that thrives alongside I-84 near exit 25A in Waterbury has been a springtime show there for at least four years.
The geese that appear on the Route 3 ramp each spring in Glastonbury have been returning there for several years, said Kevin Nursick, a state Department of Transportation official who is a regular commuter on the road.
"It's one of the most dangeous places, at least for us, to think of raising a family," said Nurisck, a spokesman for the DOT. "But I've seen geese with their babies in that same spot each spring for several years now. It's hard to tell, but I assume it's the same nesting pair."
The highway-side parade of goose parents and offspring is a rite of spring that motorists, state troopers and state highway crews see annually: Downy goslings pecking away at the grass, sheparded by watchful bird parents, seemingly oblivious to the rushing traffic nearby.
State police with Troop A in Southbury who patrol the Waterbury stretch see the geese near exit 25A each spring and on occasion get called to fender-benders caused by someone who brakes suddenly to avoid the geese.
"We've had a few accidents there. Just property damage. No injuries. Last one was about two months ago," Trooper Richard McDaniel said." People see the family of geese and stop suddenly."
Eoin McClure, a supervisor in the DOT regional highway maintenance office in Waterbury, is new to the job this year. He's spotted the birds by the exit but says no squashed geese have been picked up this spring by DOT crews in that area.
That's not to say that roadside birds aren't in danger. Earlier this month, a goose family that tried to cross Route 67 in Oxford got hit by cars, killing the mother and several goslings. Three surviving goslings were taken to the Ansonia Nature Center for care.
Nursick said the goslings he spots on the sides of Route 3 each spring are closely watched by the adult which hover over the babies and push them away from the road. The birds seem to know to stay away from the traffic, he said. Which is a good thing, because the state policy is to not interfere with wildlife and let them alone.
"I don't know why they return to nest there, but maybe it offers protection in an odd way," Nursick said. "The busy road cuts off access to would-be predators, at least on one side."

A new survey reveals details about security experts' privacy concerns.
China is the country feared most for privacy violations, a new survey executed by open source security software developer AlienVault has found.
In the survey, which questioned 300 IT security experts at the InfoSec conference in April, 40 per cent of respondents chose China as the country that most worried them about privacy breaches.
Tied for the title of second most feared nations were the Russian and US governments at 13 per cent, with the UK only slightly less fearsome at 12 per cent. Four per cent of respondents believe aliens (ed : any proof they actually exist?) pose a threat to privacy, while five per cent reported that they have no privacy concerns.
However, most respondents said that internal staff are the biggest threat to their data, with 71 per cent of respondents claiming that staff are potentially more dangerous than hackers, the government and other third parties.
The survey also revealed that more than a quarter of companies believe a major security breach could prove to be a life or death matter for their customers.
"We know that if a government site or a national critical infrastructure is hacked it will cost lives, but it's the impact for private companies that is all too often ignored", said AlienVault president and CEO Barmak Meftah in a statement.

The following headline caught my eye after a particularly bizarre experience with a local Federal Agency.

In my now four month searching for employment I received an email from a local federal agency regarding an employment opportunity for someone with my background and skills. The position is local to me and gave the particulars of the job along with the name of the individual to contact who would be reviewing resume?s.
Now the job alert and information was emailed to me and yet the only way that I?m able to submit a resume for the position is via FAX. Yes it?s not a typo, this federal agency wants resume?s submitted via FAX.
I quickly checked my calendar and yes it?s 2012, and why we?re still using a FAX as a communication method escapes me. What?s even more interesting is that I had three email communications back and forth with the individual who originally sent me the employment opportunity so someone and some part of the agency has moved at least partially to the world of electronic communications.
However, I?m certain that the use of the FAX machine as a communication tool by this federal agency, continues as, it?s the way things have always been done, and they have no vision of the future.

Overcoming Stigma and Improving Mental ... - Health and Fitness

Although an estimated 44 million adults and 13.7 million children in America have a diagnosable mental disorder each year, the issue of mental health remains surrounded by stigma and misunderstanding. This May marks the 63rd anniversary of Mental Health Month, but the problem of mental illness requires greater attention as a major 21st-century public health challenge. Among the millions of affected Americans, fewer than half get help, even though 80 to 90 percent of mental disorders are treatable using medication and other therapies. These disorders take an enormous toll on individuals and families, as well as society as a whole. In addition to the significant human impact, mental illness has enormous economic costs. Treatment for depression alone is estimated to cost $83 billion yearly, while lost productivity among those affected by mental disorders impacts the well-being of businesses, individuals and their families.
Despite the prevalence of mental illness, the stigma is so profound that many consider mental health problems to be the result of personal character flaws rather than real illnesses, like heart disease or diabetes. Addressing mental illness as a serious 21st-century public health challenge means:
- Focusing on specific age, racial/ethnic and gender-related risk factors
- Improving public education and reducing stigma so that more people are willing and able to seek help
- Strengthening the role of primary care doctors in screening for mental illness and referring patients to mental health professionals
- Creating a comprehensive therapeutic approach that combines culturally competent, psychotherapeutic approaches with medication, if indicated.
- Providing parity for health insurance coverage for mental illness
Mental disorders include anxiety disorders (e.g., post-traumatic stress and obsessive-compulsive disorders), mood disorders (i.e., depression and bipolar disorder), eating disorders including anorexia and bulimia, addictive disorders (such as alcoholism), and personality disorders. However, not all demographic groups are affected equally by various categories of mental disorders. In an NIH survey of American adults conducted in 2008, age, sex and race variables were analyzed among those who had serious mental illness. Females were more affected than males, younger Americans more than older Americans, with varying results across ethnicity. Understanding the impact of gender, age and ethnic/racial differences is important in designing programs to reduce the prevalence of mental illnesses and in targeting effective interventions.
Sex differences in mental illness take several forms, including in the prevalence of the types of disorders that impact men and women. For instance, depression and PTSD are more common in women while other disorders, like alcoholism and antisocial personality disorder, are more common in men. The causes for these gender differences are in part linked to biological factors, such as the impact of hormones. There are also other risk factors for mental disorders that disproportionately affect women, including violence, low socioeconomic status, income inequality, subordinate status within society and the stress of multiple roles including work and child care responsibilities. Given these circumstances, women are more likely to suffer from specific mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, and are also 50 percent less likely to use mental health services than men.
Children and young adults are also at high risk for developing mental disorders, with 13 percent of youth in the United States under the age of 18 meeting the criteria for one of the six most prevalent mental illnesses: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, eating disorders, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and behavioral disorders. Although there is some controversy about whether disorders like ADHD and bipolar disorder are over-diagnosed in American children, youth are at a very real risk for mental health problems that can be exacerbated by environmental factors, such as abuse and neglect, a stressful learning environment and media influences that propagate ideal body types.
Understanding the factors that contribute to mental illness is the first step; the second is to shatter the stigma that surrounds seeking help for mental illness, a stigma that is very pervasive in most cultures. The result is low rates of detection and treatment. Only 2 in every 5 people experiencing a mood, anxiety or substance abuse disorder seek assistance in the year of the onset of the illness.
A strategy to decrease this stigma is to educate the public that mental disorders have a biological and neurological basis, and are not a character flaw or personal weakness. Another strategy is increased outreach to affected individuals and their families. Public health education campaigns should encourage people to recognize signs of mental illness in their loved ones and urge them to seek help. Campaigns that engage celebrities, athletes and community members who have been affected by a mental illness to come forward as role models for those who are silently struggling can be very helpful.
Low rates of diagnosis are confounded by the fact that doctors may fail to detect mental illness even when patients seek help. Primary care physicians are not trained to be mental health providers, and few mental health providers work in the primary care setting. Thus, less than half of those who meet diagnostic criteria for mental disorders are identified by their physicians. A recent study found that primary care providers fail to recognize almost two-thirds of their patients who have a mental disorder. Doctors are often unable to identify the diagnostic criteria for a majority of the most prevalent mental illnesses. Primary care physicians and nurses must be better educated in the early detection of mental illness and be able to refer patients to qualified mental health professionals. Mental illnesses often complicate treatment of other illnesses like cancer or chronic diabetes, in part because the patient has lost emotional resilience. By detecting mental illness early, primary care professionals have the potential to dramatically change the quality of life of the patient and decrease the effects of co-morbidity with other illnesses.
Treatment for mental disorders can include a combination of psychotherapy, medications, social support and lifestyle changes. Support from family, friends and the community is vital. Additionally, behavioral interventions, including exercise, improved nutrition, sleep and stress reduction, can contribute to overall health and enable individuals to better manage their emotional problems.
Mental Health Month is a time to raise awareness about the public health problem of mental illness. Targeting at-risk populations, decreasing the stigma surrounding mental disorders, integrating mental health into primary care settings and providing comprehensive treatment strategies will promote more effective diagnosis and treatment of these illnesses in the future.
