Pioneer reveals AppRadio 2, loads of in-dash navigation systems

So long, AppRadio. Hello, AppRadio 2. Here at CES 2012, Pioneer was on-hand to showcase its newest smartphone powered in-vehicle audio system. The latest iteration touts the same functionality as the original, but adds compatibility for many of the latest Android smartphones equipped with either the Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) or a micro HDMI connection. It's boasting a 7-inch (800 x 480) capacitive touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth for hands-free calling, an input for an optional vehicle-mounted rear facing back-up camera, an input for interfacing with the vehicle's steering wheel controls and two sets of pre-amp outputs for connection to external amplifiers.The new guy will be shipping in April for $499, and if you're looking to keep steady with the original, that one will continue to be available for $399. UK & World News: Cameron hails London 2012 legacy

David Cameron hailed the London 2012 legacy as ministers gathered at the Olympic Park 200 days before the Games' opening ceremony.

The Prime Minister called a Cabinet meeting at the site in Stratford, east London, and urged ministers to fully exploit the opportunities the summer showpiece and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will offer.

Mr Cameron, London mayor Boris Johnson and Lord Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, will tour the park later while other ministers fan out to visit sports facilities, businesses, schools and organisations across the UK in a co-ordinated push to promote the Games' value.

Opening the meeting, the Prime Minister said: "A very warm welcome everyone to the Olympic Park, and a happy new year. This is the first Cabinet meeting of the new year and it is appropriate we are having it here."

He told senior Government ministers they would hear a presentation from Lord Coe, updating them on progress for the Games' legacy.

Mr Cameron said six of the eight main venues had already secured their legacies, adding: "Not only are they already up and running, but they already have a future, and we can be very proud of that."

Ministers travelled to the site on board a high-speed Olympic Javelin shuttle train from St Pancras station in central London. Their meeting took place at the 7,000-capacity handball arena, with tables erected on the court surrounded by multi-coloured seats.

The Cabinet meeting was the first for new Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood, who took up the post after Sir Gus O'Donnell retired last month.

Earlier, organisers said newly-agreed contracts for the long-term running of three more of the eight permanent Olympic venues would create 254 jobs for local people paid at London living wage rate.

Officials remain confident they will secure deals for the remaining two - the main stadium and the media centre - in time for the opening ceremony.

Football: Japan's women scoop treble

(CNN) -- Almost six months after Japan's women gave the country a much-needed boost by winning the football World Cup, the team was again celebrating after scooping a hat-trick of prestigious awards.

At a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland late Monday, Homare Sawa was crowned FIFA Women's World Player of the Year after she captained Japan to the Women's World Cup title in Germany, while her manager Norio Sasaki was named coach of the year.

"I couldn't comprehend it when my name was called," Sawa told reporters Tuesday.

"I felt like I was in a dream, just like the World Cup. There are so many great players out there. It was an unimaginable moment, walking up to the podium, being among all those people."

Japan's Football Association also picked up the FIFA Fair Play Award in recognition of the hardships the country endured following the earthquake and tsunami that devastated large parts of Japan on March 11 last year.

Team skipper Sawa, dressed in a traditional kimono, was joined on stage by JFA president Junji Ogura to receive the accolade.

"It's a great honor for JFA to receive such a prestigious award from FIFA," said Ogura. "We will do our best to continue to prepare in our activities. We are very proud in this award."

Japan's surprise victory in Germany in July last year denied the much-fancied U.S. team a record third title. They even battled back twice after going a goal behind.

But even as the team progressed through the competition against the odds, it became about more than just football or a trophy. Their exploits were inspiring a country that had suffered so much.

"After the disaster, the whole country was in the spirit of trying their best. What we saw was the soul of Japan," one fan, Yasushi Tsuha, told CNN after watching the match at a Tokyo bar.

Despite the fact the game kicked off at almost 4 a.m. local time, men and women flocked to watch the game. By the end of the epic clash, there were few dry eyes in the bar as the victorious Japanese players lifted the World Cup trophy for the first time.

They were overcome with emotion and pride in a team that few knew anything about before this competition.

"When I see women like me giving so much spirit, it gives me energy to keep going in my daily life," said another fan Ayako Nishi.

The national team left Japan bound for the tournament with little fanfare. A month later, they were swamped by jubilant fans as they arrived back at Tokyo's Narita airport as national heroes.

Their success looks likely to continue in 2012, after the Nadeshiko qualified comfortably for the Olympic Games in London later this summer.

WikiPad prototype hits CES 2012, does exist

Wikipad's promise of a touchscreen, dual-analog gaming controls and glasses-free display meant we were itching to get our gaming fingers on it. Heck, on paper that's the illegitimate love child of the Vita and the 3DS. Fortunately, we managed to bump into the tablet on the CES show floor. It turns out the tablet is quite a svelte thing once you unshackle it from the game controls. With a soft-touch backing, the eight-inch tablet hits the sweet spot size-wise, with a glasses-free 3D display that was able to show off the entirety of Avatar. Otherwise, it's Ice Cream Sandwich as normal. We're going to shrug off the OS sluggishness here to prototype teething, but it's something that we hope disappears in the finished product.

Sadly, there's a bit of a major problem tackling a hands-on with this thing -- and it's not the Gamegear-trouncing size of the thing; the gaming controls weren't functioning with any games on the device we had. While the Sonic CD app icon on the Android desktop piqued our interest, it wasn't installed and we were then told that the controls weren't currently working with games. Menu navigation was possible, and the digital inputs were responsive, but a little shaky. The pair of analog sticks feel about right, though obviously we need to see some in-game responsiveness before we pass proper judgement. The device is set to launch during Spring, so hopefully they'll get the gaming side sorted soon. Expect a more in-depth hands-on when there's more to play around with.

Iran sentences US man to death for spying

TEHRAN, Iran?? Iran's Revolutionary Court sentenced an American to death for spying for the CIA, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Monday.

"Amir Mirza Hekmati was sentenced to death ... for cooperating with the hostile country (the United States) and spying for the CIA," Fars said, without giving a source.

"The court found him Corrupt on Earth and Mohareb (waging war on God)," it added.

Last week, Hekmati's family said he was not getting adequate legal representation.

In a statement, they said that his "only advocate in Iran is a government-appointed lawyer who he first met on the day of his trial."

"We have struggled to provide Amir with an attorney in Iran," the family wrote in the statement. "We have sought to hire at least 10 different attorneys in Tehran to no avail."

The Fars report Monday did not say when the verdict was issued. Under Iranian law, he has 20 days to appeal.

Hekmati's family said the former U.S. military translator was visiting his grandmothers.

Hekmati, 28, was born in Arizona and graduated from a Michigan high school. His father Ali is a professor at a community college in Flint, Michigan.

The State Department has called for Hekmati's release, and spokesman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington last week that the department continues to wait for Iranian authorities to grant Swiss diplomats access to him in prison.

The Swiss government represents U.S. interests in Iran because the two countries don't have diplomatic relations.

Nuland said Hekmati is a dual U.S.-Iranian national, and "the Iranian government has historically not recognized our rights to access."

"That doesn't change the fact that we will keep asking for it," she said.

Iran charges that as a U.S. Marine, Hekmati received special training and served at U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan before heading to Iran for his alleged intelligence mission.

'Deceived'
Last month, Fars reported that the prosecution had applied for capital punishment because the suspect "admitted that he received training in the United States and planned to imply that Iran was involved in terrorist activities in foreign countries" after returning to the U.S.

That report said Hekmati repeated a confession broadcast on state TV Dec. 18 .

Hekmati's lawyer, who was identified only by his surname, Samadi, denied the charges, according to the December report.

In court on Dec. 27, Hekmati was quoted by Fars as saying, "I was deceived by the CIA."

"Although I was appointed to break into Iran's intelligence systems and act as a new source for the CIA, I had no intention of undermining the country," Fars quoted Hekmati as saying.

Current and former U.S. government officials told Reuters in November that Iran had succeeded in uncovering the identities of several CIA informants.

Netflix close to signing deals with Sony, Disney, Paramount and ITV, to debut in the UK soon? (update: pricing pegged at ?5.99/month)

Those with a PS3 in the United Kingdom might have gotten a sneak peek at a placeholder, but according to The Guardian, apparently its proper "early 2012" launch isn't far off. Purportedly the video streaming service is close to signing rights to content from Sony, Disney and Paramount, which'll join existing agreements with Lionsgate, Miramax and MGM. But it isn't just studios, as Channel 4 and ITV are supposedly close to joining the UK bash as-well. If everything goes to plan, most of the British Isles will be treated to an ad campaign that'll reveal all next week. Game on, Lovefilm.

Update: Well, it looks like we don't have to wait until next week for all of those details after all. Some Google ads have now started appearing in searches for Netflix that peg the price at £5.99 per month (or about $9), and also confirm that the service is headed to the Wii and Xbox 360 in addition to the PS3. Unfortunately, that netflix.com/UK page isn't functional just yet.
