UBC researcher invents 'lab on a chip' device to study malaria

UBC researcher invents 'lab on a chip' device to study malaria [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Feb-2012

University of British Columbia researcher Hongshen Ma has developed a simple and accurate device to study malaria, a disease that currently affects 500 million people per year worldwide and claims a million lives.

Spread by mosquitoes, malaria is caused by a tiny parasite that infects human red blood cells. Ma and his team designed a "lab on a chip" device to better understand the changes in red blood cells caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the most common species of malaria parasites.

Ma explains the device will help those conducting laboratory research or clinical trials evaluate the efficacy of different compounds in treating malaria a disease that is increasingly resistant to drugs.

"Our results show that it's possible to precisely measure the stiffening of red blood cells caused by the parasite at various stages of infection," says Ma, assistant professor in the UBC departments of mechanical engineering and urologic sciences, and senior research scientist at the Vancouver Prostate Center.

Normal human red blood cells must squeeze through capillaries many times smaller than their own diameter in order to deliver oxygen to all tissues in the body. Red blood cells infected with malaria gradually lose this capability, which disrupts blood flow, causing failure of vital organs and eventually death.

Measuring 2" x 1" (50 cm x 25 cm), Ma's microfluidic device deforms single red blood cells through a series of funnel-shaped constrictions. The pressure required to push the cell through each constriction is measured and then used to calculate the cell's deformability.

By measuring the deformability of an infected red blood cell, researchers can obtain vital information about the status of the disease and response to treatment, explains Ma, whose findings appear in the current issue of the journal Lab on a Chip.

Ma notes that although there has been considerable research on the biomechanics of malaria, "current methods to measure red cell deformability are either too complex to be used in clinical settings or are not sensitive enough."

Open Letter to NZ MTB Clubs/Other Interested Cyclists | Spoke ...

I?ve been on the road for the last week and for a good deal of that time I was out of cell and internet range, when I finally got coverage a couple of hundred emails were waiting for my attention, this one from Chris Mildon I figured was worth your attention. Its in regards to the BikeNZ Plan and it?s well worth a read? It?s worth noting that i?ve already received emails from two clubs saying that Chris?s view isn?t supported by their clubs (Rotorua and Hawkes Bay), funny thing is if your a mountain biker in Rotorua you?ll have to go to Napier or Cambrridge because the BikeNZ Roadshow is skipping your town.

Chris?s email below.

?You?ll be aware that there is a road show looming where BikeNZ will be presenting its Bike Plan around NZ, gathering feedback and presenting its view of the future. I?d like to provide some information to you that I hope will provide a level of balance to this presentation, and hopefully prompt interested mountainbikers and cyclists to look at the future of this space with a broader view.

You may also be aware that I resigned from the MTBNZ Executive in December 2011 having been involved with this organisation since the formation of BikeNZ, 10 years ago. 3 ? years of my involvement were as president of MTBNZ (post 2006 Rotorua World Champs), a role I really enjoyed and under which I felt we made a positive difference for both MTBNZ and the clubs it services. This letter reflects my own opinions, and may or may not reflect the current positioning of the MTBNZ Executive.

I have always been a strong supporter of MTB Clubs, and an often lonely advocate for a strong MTBNZ servicing their needs. Under my watch, a conscious decision was taken by the MTBNZ Executive to move on from a history of BikeNZ non-delivery in specific areas, taking responsibility back for many crucial deliver items once vested with BikeNZ. As a volunteer organisation, MTBNZ has worked extremely hard to cover off these items and has done pretty well with very limited resources ? but as part of this push a corresponding, sustainable structure needed to be put into place to ensure we could continue with this progress, while being responsible for our own destiny, and while always being led by our MTB Club Affiliates. That desired, sustainable structure has not been able to be put in place and any attempt to do so has not been supported by BikeNZ. However, with start-up initiatives such as a fully subscribed MTB Club levy system supporting MTBNZ there is still an opportunity to make a difference.

I have always been and continue to be a supporter of an ?umbrella type parent organisation?, in this case BikeNZ. MTBNZ has always been clear that the BikeNZ structure can deliver very well in some areas, but where sport (mountainbike) specific knowledge is required the knowledge base, passion and motivation required to effectively make a difference with those sport specific items sits with a MTB Club elected national organisation ? MTBNZ.

Unfortunately and especially in the last three years, there can be no doubt that MTBNZ and the sport of mountainbiking in general has been marginalised via the BikeNZ relationship. MTBNZ?s stance has increasingly been viewed as a threat rather than as a positive and valued delivery structure. For what is surely the largest recreational cycling sport in New Zealand, and also the fastest growing the reasons behind this really need to be fleshed out.

BikeNZ?s Plan covers off some really good stuff ? there is no doubt that BikeNZ will be able to deliver some items in that plan well. However, part of that Plan which is not clearly articulated, involves disbanding its Member Organisations (BMXNZ, NZ Schools Cycling Assoc, Road and Track, MTBNZ), assuming all their functional responsibilities including financial packages, and setting these organisations up as Advisory Panels. As Advisory Panels, these organisations will have extremely limited, if any control over anything sport specific. Relative to MTBNZ, and to mountainbiking in NZ in general, this should be starting to set the alarm bells off for you.

Consider the many strong, vibrant MTB Clubs around the country ? why are they strong and so successful? It is because MTB Clubs understand the importance of quality trail resources and providing riding opportunities for people who chose to ride bikes off road. The success of providing those resources often can be easily traced back to the strength and confidence of local relationships and the passion and local knowledge of the people on the ground at that grass roots level. MTB Clubs don?t need a lot of help with this side of things, although undoubtedly the great work MTBNZ has done in the background at a high level of advocacy over many years has made and continues to make the provision of these resources a lot easier to realise.

BikeNZ?s membership plan will remove MTBNZ from any effective link with MTB Clubs. The proposed BikeNZ membership model requires direct membership with BikeNZ ? a capturing of numbers (and fees) that supposedly will return higher levels of investment into BikeNZ from SPARC and other funders. However, no country that has rolled out this type of centralised membership model has balanced it out with greater grass roots support ? it simply does not happen and the link with grass roots and recreational mountainbikers is not only lost from a national level, it is increasingly marginalised. Increased investment invariably ends up supporting an overhead heavy organisation. A great example is the British Cycling model ? very similar to that proposed by BikeNZ. Despite massive investment the grass roots/recreational focus on cycling in Britain is sadly lacking.

I have always advocated for and argued for BikeNZ to support MTBNZ in setting up in a more sustainable way. Having part time staff operating under the MTBNZ banner delivering through our affiliated MTB Club network which has an already established link through to recreational off road cyclists seems like such a simple concept, but just does not fit with the BikeNZ centralised, business oriented model. Surely the MTB sport experts, voted onto the MTBNZ Executive by NZ?s MTB Clubs are ideally placed to be able to do this? I encourage you to go along to BikeNZ?s Roadshow but look beyond the shiny bells and whistles, and I also encourage you to ask the hard questions around how BikeNZ intends to service the real needs of mountainbikers. Why BikeNZ is basing its Bike Plan in many cases on overseas models that have clearly failed with grass roots delivery and support should also be explored.

I would also encourage you to consider the current structure of MTBNZ. Depowering this organisation to an Advisory Panel is a structural change that shouldn?t be allowed to happen ? full and detailed consultation with you, the MTB Club Affiliates on any structural change is a must. I continue to advocate for a sustainable MTBNZ as an alternate and viable structure to that proposed in the BikeNZ Plan, one which stands on its own, albeit with a solid partnership agreement with BikeNZ ? defining those items BikeNZ can and will deliver. But leaving the sport specific items vested with MTBNZ, especially in the areas of:
? land access, trail resources and the ongoing rollout of quality riding opportunities for recreational mountainbikers
? continuing to own and manage its own events (NZ MTB Cup, National and Oceania Championships)

MTBNZ is elected under the terms of its constitution by its Affiliate MTB Clubs, and the power and responsibility to make any change sits squarely with you all. I hope you can make some balanced decisions in the near future for the good and healthy future of our wonderful sport.?

Yours sincerely
Chris Mildon

(AP) ? Arkansas had learned a few things about not giving up thanks to its first game against Tennessee this season.

Those lessons paid off as the Lady Razorbacks pulled out a 72-71 win against the 10th-ranked Lady Vols in overtime, handing them a program-worst third home loss for the season. Tennessee had beaten Arkansas 69-38 on Jan. 8 in Fayetteville.

"These kids came in here believing that they could win this game despite the fact that we got beat badly by Tennessee," Arkansas coach Tom Collen said. "The further along we went in the game, the more they believed. They just made a lot of great plays down the stretch to finish it off."

The Lady Razorbacks snapped an 18-game losing skid to Tennessee and became the second Southeastern Conference team this season to win in Knoxville, a place where the Lady Vols previously had not lost a conference game for nearly four years. South Carolina got its first win in Knoxville on Feb. 2.

For Tennessee, it was the third loss at home this season ? the most the program has ever had in a season. The Lady Vols also lost to No. 1 Baylor on Nov. 27.

Shekinna Stricklen hit a layup for Tennessee with 48 seconds left to play to cut Arkansas' lead to 70-69. The Lady Vols got the ball back when Keira Peak lost it out of bounds under the Arkansas basket.

Peak fouled Stricklen, who missed both of her free throws with 10 seconds left. Kamiko Williams then fouled Harris, who sealed the win for Arkansas (21-6, 10-5 Southeastern Conference) with a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left to play.

"I think we all definitely wanted to forget about that first game," Harris said. "We know we played bad that game. We are confident in oru abilities offensively, and I think we were able to stick shots."

Peak then fouled Ariel Massengale to keep the Lady Vols from attempting a 3-pointer to tie the game. Massengale hit both of her foul shots, and Quistelle Williams missed a pair of free throws for Arkansas with 3 seconds left, but Stricklen couldn't get a half-court shot off before the buzzer sounded.

"I have to sink the free throws," Stricklen said. "We had a bad first half, but we came back in the second half. We fought. We just had to step up, and we didn't make the free throws in the end."

The Lady Vols held a 62-60 lead with 48 seconds left in regulation but let C'eira Ricketts run right by them and dish the ball to Sarah Watkins, who hit a layup to tie the game at 62 points with 9 seconds left and force overtime.

Watkins had 18 points, and Ricketts finished with 16 points.

Stricklen led Tennessee (20-8, 11-4) with 17 points, all scored after halftime. Glory Johnson scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

Both teams struggled with hanging on to the ball. Arkansas committed 21 turnovers and Tennessee 19.

The Lady Vols defense had some success frustrating the Lady Razorbacks, who committed four shot-clock violations.

But when Arkansas could get a shot off, it often was a good one. The Lady Razorbacks shot 11 of 19 in the first half and finished 50 percent from the floor.

Watkins drained a 3-point shot and followed with a long jumper to give Arkansas a 21-16 lead with 7:29 in the first half, and the Lady Razorbacks entered halftime with a 31-26 lead ? nearly matching their points total in their 69-38 loss to the Lady Vols on Jan. 8.

Arkansas managed to keep Tennessee off the boards and out of the paint in the first half. The Lady Razorbacks outrebounded the Lady Vols 14-8 and limited them to 9-for-20 shooting before halftime.

Tennessee found some life after halftime from Stricklen and Johnson, who were a combined 0-for-4 with no rebounds in the first half.

"We dug ourselves a hole in the first half," Tennessee associate head coach Holly Warlick said. "You can't have two of your best players not scoring and not rebounding."

Stricklen sank a pair of 3s to pull Tennessee within two points, and Ariel Massengale stole the ball from Ricketts and hit a layup to tie it at 44 points with 12:08 to go. Johnson came up with key rebounds and found her way to the rim and free-throw line to help the Lady Vols keep a slight edge until just before the end of regulation.

Tennessee had entered the game tied with Kentucky for first place in the SEC, but the Wildcats regained sole control of the conference with a win against South Carolina on Thursday night with one game left to play. The Lady Vols dropped to second place.

Arkansas moved into a tie for third place with Georgia.

.

I attended the "Beyond sports vs games" workshop at the IT University of Copenhagen this week. The workshop was an attempt to get (sociology of) sports and computer games researchers to meet and discuss, but the sports researchers didn't show up.Knowing what I know about the organizer, T.L. Taylor (her new book is called "Raising the stakes: E-sports and the professionalization of computer gaming"), I thought the topic of the workshop would be competitive computer gaming and the "sportification" of computer games. My contribution was a "curveball" as it wasn't about competitive computer gaming, but about competitive programming (i.e. programming competitions) in relation to "electronic sports".

It turned out that my contribution was even more peripheral, as most of the participants were interested in sports computer games, i.e. for example (annually released - great for business!) football, american football and basketball computer games. The emphasis wasn't on "how computer games are turned into sports", but on "how sports are turned into videogames". Which is really really really big, but also situated straight in my dead angle. One of the papers we read in preparation for the workshop stated that:

"The sports gaming industry is the crown jewel of the video games world. It is a one billion dollar per year industry; sports games account for more than thirty percent of all video games sales."

I had no idea. To a large extent, we are talking about computer games for sports fans. I'm not a sports fan. Truth be told, I hardly play computer games anymore due to lack of time (except of course together with my children as a family activity).

----------

There were a couple of presentations (Olli Sotamaa and Abe Stein) about sports fandom and fantasy sport games, i.e. putting together you football "dream team" (with players from many different real-world teams) and competing against other teams based on how well "your" players are doing in their real-life games. I thus learned that there is a massive group of people who spend a humongous amounts of time in the sports fandom-sports television-sports computer games nexus, speculating about future games and also simulating and replaying different imaginary pasts ("who would have won in a boxing match between Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson?"). I like the term "imaginative labor" which was used, it's such a charming combination (contradiction?) of work and play. Even sportsmen have apparently been known to do it, playing "themselves" in computer games and trying out things in the computer game that they later bring with them to the real-world sports games. There were some interesting musings about how the "tribal" factor of sports is on the decline because of the ascent of fantasy sports games (which apparently is really big in the States). Your allegiance to your favorite team is weakened because you can also cheer for one (or several) players in the opposing team (because you've recruited them to your fantasy team). There were also plenty of references to the movie "Moneyball" (based on a book by one of my favorite journalists, Michael Lewis). To some sports fans, the focus has now shifted from the actual weekly games to the statistics that these games generate (and that is immediately inputted in to the fantasy league circus).

----------

Another interesting talk (by Chris Paul) was about how sports game revenue is changing from the game (a physical disc) to charging (also) for online access. The world's largest publisher, Electronic Arts (EA) is leading the way with their sports games. It's in the nature of things that last year's sports game is less interesting than this year's, but when the focus shifts to online, new ways of decreasing the value of the game you bought last year appear; when others fans/gamers shift to the new game, you're not where the action is anymore unless you too buy the game, and EA can find ways to further decrease the value of your "old" game, for example by not updating or supporting it - thereby implicitly forcing you to move on and buy (also) the latest annual ($60) edition of the game. My personal question was if/how the economic recession and youth unemployment has affected gaming revenues (youth - under 25 - unemployment in Greece and Spain is almost at 50% according to 3rd quarter 2011 Eurostat figures). Do people nowadays play more (since they have more time) or less (since they have less money)? More generally, is gaming (considered) expensive or inexpensive compared to other expenses? Is it recession-proof or does it suffer from harsh economic times? The answer was apparently that gaming has been perceived to be recession-proof - up until the most recent (2008-) recession. So, what would happen to the gaming industry if/when the economic cake doesn't grow anymore? How would a prolonged period of no/negative economic growth affect gaming and the gaming industry?

--------

Ren Reynolds' "Sports law and digital play" started from a perspective of sports law before moving to games. Sports have become an arena where some (violent) behaviors are OK/permitted - even though the same behaviors aren't OK in the rest of society, i.e. it is permitted to hit each other hard (in boxing) and hitting others is tolerated (in American ice hockey). In-between play and non-play (ordinary life) is a zone where "shit that goes down" happens (fighting in ice-hockey) and that the law (lawyers, judges, courts) nowadays stay away from. The question becomes if this is what is happening in gaming right now - despite long and complicated End User License Agreements (EULAs) that supposedly or purportedly regulates gaming (but is increasingly dismissed by courts when game-related cases arrive there).

----------

The two talks that were most interesting to me were two of the organizers' talks about pro-gaming and competitions, i.e. T.L. Taylor's talk about "institutional governance in e-sports" and Emma Witkowski's talk about "negotiations of hegemonic sporting masculinities at LANs".T.L. talked about the sometimes-fraught relationship between two very powerful actors (institutions) in the e-sports space; the influential game developer Blizzard and the Korean e-Sports Professional Association (KeSPA). They have very different views of authorship and ownership of "digital playing fields", so what happens when a "property" (a computer game) becomes an important cultural phenomenon (as Blizzard's "Starcraft" game is in Korea)?

Emma talked about what is and what isn't considered to be "real sporting skills" in e-sports, with plenty of references to non-gamer/athletic ideals and cultures. E-sports is a gendered space, rife with masculinity and sexism and where pro-gamers (and their fans) predominantly are young, white, straight, middle-class men. Emma's talked about a study of hers on how players from "the margins" (women, minorities, but primarily players of a marginalized game) navigate and rebel against these structures and practices.

----------

I should also write something about my own contribution to the workshop, "Programming competitions as (e-)sports", as well as an analysis of what I personally got out of the workshop and in relation to my study. I won't do that in this particular blog post though (it is long enough already). I might write a follow-up blog post where I summarize my thoughts as well as implications and decision related to my ongoing study in a week or two.

Pentimento: Exile and Genealogy

Jude will soon be here. My husband is traveling to China in March, where he will be met by our great friend Otepoti. Jude will technically become our son, appropriately enough, on the feast day of Saint Joseph, the adoptive father of the Lord.

I have been reading Testimony of Hope by Cardinal Francis Xavier Nguy?n V?n Thu?n, a collection of the spiritual exercises he preached to the papal household in 2000. Cardinal V?n Thu?n, who was imprisoned by the Communists in his native Vietnam for thirteen years, begins his exercises by reflecting on the first chapter of Matthew, which describes the temporal genealogy of Christ. "For Asians," he notes,

and in particular for me as a Vietnamese, the remembrance of ancestors has an immense value. . . I myself know the names of fifteen generations of my ancestors going back as far as 1698 . . . Through our genealogies, we come to realize that we are part of a history greater than we are, and we welcome with greater truth the sense of our own histories.

Jude will know next to nothing about the ancestors who are, to use the Italian word, his genitori, the ones who physically and biologically generated him, or about his family history.? My husband and Otepoti will visit the orphanage to which he was brought after being found by the police, and the place where he was found, in order to be able to salvage some scraps of his unknowable past. But essentially Jude will be a deracinated person, transplanted into our family. I wonder what this will feel like for him as he grows older.

I must confess that, compared with Cardinal V?n Thu?n, I know next to nothing about my own genealogy. I know when three out of my four pairs of great-grandparents came to this country (all at roughly the same time, about a hundred years ago). I even knew one of my great-grandmothers very well, because she lived with my family when I was little. But of the others, I know very little, and that's unlikely to change.

A few years ago I had a gig in Rome, and afterward I traveled south to the village of some of my own genitori to meet my distant Italian cousins for the first time. Although it was a marvelous trip, I felt very strongly while visiting that I was nothing like them, that I had nothing in common with them, that I was wholly unmarked by the biological circumstances of having been engendered by the same ancestors. While we shared certain physical characteristics, our lives, our circumstances, and our ways of thinking diverged so much that it was hard to believe we were branches of the same tree.? But the truth is that I had felt myself from a young age to be a deracinated person, too, without much commonality with the culture of my family, and in some ways I had consciously striven to set myself apart from that culture and that family.

In Testimony of Hope, Cardinal V?n Thu?n notes that the "book of genealogy of Jesus Christ" is full of unexpected, even bizarre, disruptions of the biological family line.? Abraham chose Isaac as his heir, rather than his first son, Ishmael.? Isaac "wished to bless Esau, his firstborn son, but according to the mysterious plan of God . . . blessed Jacob." Jacob, in his turn, chose neither Reuben, his firstborn, nor Joseph, "the beloved and best of all his sons," but rather Judah, who with his brothers had sold Joseph into slavery.? Likewise, the women Matthew mentions "find themselves in strange situations. Tamar is a sinner, Rahab a prostitute, Ruth a foreigner. The Gospel does not even dare to name the fourth woman; she is simply 'the wife of Uriah'" -- Bathsheba, with whom David committed adultery and whose husband he contrived to have killed.

But, as V?n Thu?n asserts, "This list of sinners' names presented by Matthew in the genealogy of Jesus does not scandalize us. Rather, it exalts the mystery of God's mercy."

While not, in the terms of immigration law, a refugee, little Jude will be coming to us from a place of suffering and persecution. What I hope is that our home and our family will not be a place of exile for him from what he might under other circumstances have considered his true home. While in one sense he will be uprooted, deracinated, a person from nowhere, I want him to know the full citizenship that only love can confer. We are all in exile, refugees from the true home, and God in His mercy has adopted all of us; those of us not biologically engendered from the bloodline of Abraham He has most mercifully grafted onto the tree of the royal house of Israel. May we never forget His mercy in having adopted us, and may we all know the full citizenship of love.

In refocusing clothing line, Olsens shun spotlight (omg!)

In this Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, handout photo provided by The Row, The Row's Fall/Winter 2012 collection is modeled during Fashion Week in New York. (AP Photo/The Row, Arno Frugier)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seem like they are committed to make their fashion collection The Row a player in the industry. To do that, they have taken a step back.

The design duo staged a handful of intimate, abbreviated runway shows at The Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue on Monday as part of New York Fashion Week. The clothes ? full of quiet elegance and impressive craftsmanship ? did all the talking. The only sound in the room came from a baby grand piano. Photographers weren't even allowed into the show, with the brand deciding to provide news outlets with their own images.

The strategy of shunning the spotlight could backfire if the Olsens didn't continue to turn out impressive clothes that draw the support of top fashion editors and retailers.

They've developed a distinct point of view that embraces fluidity and sophistication, usually with monochromatic outfits in tempting fabrics. Embellishment is minimal, but the looks they presented for fall ramped up the uptown luxury factor with mink and alligator trims, and quite a bit of dressy taffeta.

The Olsens explained in their notes that they were courting the American woman "from day to night." Think cozy chenille jackets or cashmere tops with an underlayer of sheer chiffon, or paired with a full-length skirt. They also put together blouses with billowy sleeves and slim bottoms.

"Slightly irreverent, she plays with duality of season and time of day. She wears summer clothing in winter and daywear in the evening. The result is a relaxed and timeless elegance," they said.

State of Disney Gaming | The Disney Blog

A screenshot from Disney Universe

One of the areas that has always been a weakness here on The Disney Blog is Disney?s gaming efforts. That?s largely because I?m not really a video game player. I tend to start one game and focus on it to the exclusion of all else in my life until I?ve conquered it. Needless to say that?s not a very healthy habit, so I only allow myself to game in small doses. So I was happy to find an excellent report on the state of gaming at The Walt Disney Company to help bring me up to speed.

It looks at social games, core games, mobile games, and my favorite MMOs:

The one thing about Disney?s MMOs, excluding ToonTown and Club Penguin, is that they are not very popular. The main reason behind this is most likely the fact that ToonTown and ClubPenguin are highly marketed on the Disney Channel and are continually updated with new content. Disney needs to learn how to make MMOs with compelling reasons to upgrade to paid membership. I tried playing Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and maybe I am alone in this, but I found that the game was hollow, both in terms of players, but also in terms of story and gameplay. Then I got hit with a brick, realizing I pretty much had to upgrade to continue playing, but felt no compelling reason to upgrade.

I?ve never been able to get into any of the Disney MMOs. Honestly, I?m just not their target market. I enjoyed the little I played Virtual Magic Kingdom, but Disney has never been able to capture that magic again.

The article also gives some consideration to a few other Disney divisions, but the lion share is spent on gaming. Read the who thing at In The Life of a Nerd blog.
